How to Properly Clean and Degrease an Engine Compartment.

How to Clean and Condition an Engine.

Cleaning and degreasing an automobile engine is not as difficult or time consuming as one might think. A clean engine not only looks better and will make your mechanic happy, but also adds value to your automobile when the time comes to sell or trade in your automobile. The following is a detailed step-by-step process how to properly clean and condition your automobile's engine

Things You Will Need:

  1. Water Hose
  2. Water Hose Nozzle with Adjustable Spray Settings
  3. Soft Bristled Brush (A Tire Brush is Ideal)
  4. Microfiber Towels
  5. Shop Vacuum
  6. Extension Cord
  7. Citrus Based Degreaser
  8. Silicone Based Conditioner and Protectant

STEP #1: Open the automobile's hood to expose the engine. Remove any large loose debris (i.e. leaves, pine straw) that may be present in the engine by hand. Use your shop vacuum to remove any remaining small loose debris.

STEP #2: Cover the distributor cap and alternator with microfiber towels to prevent soaking these engine components with water and chemicals.

STEP #3: Using your water hose and adjustable water hose nozzle, select the light pressure spray option available. Do not use high pressure when cleaning your engine. Use of a high pressure sprasy can cause damage to your engine. Rinse the entire engine beginning with the top of the hood and continuing to down.

STEP #4: After you have thoroughly rinsed the underside of the hood and engine spray the engine thoroughly with your automotive citrus based degreaser beginning with the hood and continuing down to the engine.

STEP #5: Once your engine has been thoroughly sprayed with your automotive citrus based degreaser, use your soft bristled brush to scrub the entire engine beginning with the underside of the hood and continuing down to the remaining engine. NOTE: The cirtus based degreaser is designed to cut through tough grease and dirt so you should not need to scrub extremely hard.

STEP #6: Once you have scrubbed the engine compartment using your soft bristled brush, use your water hose and water hose nozzle, again using the light pressure spray option, to rinse the citrus based degreaser from the engine compartment beginning with the underside of the hood and continuing down until the whole engine compartment has been rinsed free of the citrus based degreaser launch x431 v+.

NOTE: Citrus based degreaser can cause discoloration and spotting if left in contact with vinyl and rubber for prolonged periods of time.

STEP #7: Now that your engine compartment has been completely rinsed free of your citrus based degreaser use your clean, dry microfiber towels to dry the underside of your hood. This also gives you a chance to clean up any stubborn or hard to reach areas that you may not have gotten with your soft bristled brush launch x431 pro3.

STEP #8: With the underside of your hood cleaned and dried, remove your microfiber towels covering the distributor cap and alternator. Using your dry microfiber towels continue to dry and spot clean the remaining engine compartment. Be sure to pay close attention to the hard to reach areas that you may not have been able to clean with your soft bristled brush.

STEP #9: Once the engine compartment has been dried and any remaining spot cleaning has been performed you are ready to apply your silicone based conditioner and protectant. Keeping a distance of 6 to 8 inches from the engine, spray your silicone based conditioner and protectant onto the vinyl, plastic and rubber components in the engine compartment.

NOTE: For best results, wait 15-30 minutes before proceeding to STEP #10. This time will allow silicone based conditioner and protectant to saturate applied surfaces leaving longer lasting shine and protection.

STEP #10: After you have applied your silicone based conditioner and protectant to the vinyl, plastic and rubber components of your engine compartment use your clean dry microfiber towel to wipe any excess silicone based conditioner and protectant from the engine compartment.

Congratulations! You have now successfully and properly cleaned and conditioned your automobile's engine compartment adding beauty and value to your automobile! Â Having a clean and properly conditioned engine compartment is a great way how to add value to your used car when selling.
