Everyone knows that there are no guarantees in life and this is especially true with cars. But think about it. Car manufacturers could not remain in business for very long if they produced unreliable vehicles. There are some rare exceptions and lemons will come off the assembly line, but they are such a small percentage of the whole, they can pretty much be dismissed.

Sometimes the person selling the car has made it a lemon. Vehicle manufacturers place easy-to-read manuals in cars coming off the assembly line for a reason. You and your mechanically inclined buddy will check the oil for cleanliness before you give it a test drive. If the oil is dirty, ask the seller when it was last changed. This owner/seller may not have properly maintained this vehicle. Check all the fluids you can.

Look at the tires: are they wearing evenly? If not, ask the owner when was the last time the tires were rotated?

Check everything you can with the dash: do all brake lights work; do both turn signals work? Do check the heat, A/C, radio and CD player.

The experts advise that you evaluate the acceleration from a complete stop when you do your test drive. Check for sluggishness and chugging, engine noise and any rattling under the hood when you accelerate.

Make some tight turns on your test spin to see how it handles these. If it doesn't handle them well, there may be some suspension problems. It's also good to ask the seller when new brake shoes were put on particularly if the car has some mileage on it.

It's always a good idea to make arrangements with a trusted mechanic and make a deal with him to hook up the vehicle in contention to his diagnostics to uncover any possible issues.

Ask the seller if he minds if you take the car to your mechanic for a once-over. If he disagrees with this plan, you have your answer.
